Charlotte, Can you tell us a bit about your jewellery brand, how and why it all started?

I was working full time as a hair and makeup artist and began creating jewellery in my spare time. I would wear the necklaces I had made on jobs and the stylists would always ask to use my jewellery on the model, as they always found it difficult sourcing delicate jewellery. I travelled to Hayman Island to shoot with the divine Rosie Huntington-Whiteley for Harper’s Bazaar and the stylist (Thelma McQuillan) covered her in my jewels for the cover shot. This was a dream come true for me as a budding jewellery designer! It was from that point that I thought perhaps my love of creating jewellery could be more than just a hobby.

You have had a retail store in Paddington for a number of years, what prompted you to expand into a bigger space?

We had been in a little space on William Street for roughly four years, which originally also doubled as our office. As the years have progressed we had to reduce the office space as the shop front needed more room to display all our jewels, and eventually we moved the office out completely. We had just reached a point where we had outgrown the space and the look of the store. When the corner store became available I was immediately interested as it has such a rich and well known history as the iconic ‘Corner Shop’. The store is in such a prominent position and is flooded with the most beautiful natural light.

Your signature design and attention to detail is evident in your jewellery pieces - was that important to you when creating a new retail space? What were you looking to create for your customers?

Absolutely! I wanted to create a space that not only reflected the beauty of the jewellery but also displayed them in a way that let the jewels do the talking. It was important that the new space convey the By Charlotte feeling the second someone walked in - which I think we have achieved perfectly. The space is light and bright with beautiful messages of hope and encouragement on the walls and mirrors which sit back perfectly with the incredible furnishings and detailing that was created just for us. It’s such a joy to walk into the store and the response we have received from our customers has been incredible.

Can you briefly describe your experience working with Mr and Mrs White in designing and creating your shop fit-out?

It has been such a beautiful process from beginning to end. I went in as such a fan of the spaces Sasha and Nathan have created and knew what they would dream up for me would be no different. It was like we just spoke the same language! I am so thrilled and proud of the new store, with each piece of furniture created perfectly for the space and the By Charlotte brand.
